No one likes to admit a mistake, and employers are no exception. But in the corporate world as in national politics, apologies have become one more critically important tool of communication. But when it comes to a smart apology, CEOs, sports heroes and politicians have a lot to learn, as it is more art than science, and a bad apology is worse than none at all.
In the workplace, the same considerations apply. When embarrassing executives become front-page fodder, it seems like the job position of "Chief Apologist" is not far off. Why has the apology become a necessary business consideration, and how should it be performed? Is it ever appropriate to apologize to an employee? To a class of individuals? Must an apology be an admission of guilt to sound sincere and be effective? In what ways should the HR professional play a role?
